Antique grandfather clocks need attention from time to time... no pun intended. Here are a few tips to adjust the time on your Antique Grandfather Clock.

If the clock is running to fast or too slow what you need to do is adjust your pendulum bob. That big round disk at the end of your pendulum is your pendulum bob. You adjust your pendulum bob with the nut located at the bottom of the bob. This is what adjusts the timing. If the bob is raised up this will make the clock run faster. If the bob is lowered this will make the clock run slower. You can expect to get this accurate to within one minute fast or slow per week. Better than that, consider yourself lucky.

Start by setting your grandfather clock to a standard electric or quartz clock or watch. Then check the time against the clock 24 hours later. If the clock is running fast, turn the nut to the left. If the clock is running slow, turn the nut to the right. Then reset the time on your clock and check it again in another 24 hours. Keep performing this process until the clock appears to be running on time. Expect to do this every week at least. Keep a record of the distance you turned the nut each time so you will have an idea of how much you’ll need to turn it in the future.

Eventually the timing will be accurate enough so that you’ll only have to check the clock once each week and it should never be off by more than a minute. Just a tip. Some grandfather clocks are made so that a full turn of the nut is actually equal to one minute. So if your clock is running 2 minutes fast then all you need to do is turn the nut two full turns to the left and this will set the timing correctly. Of course the only way to know if your clock is one of these is to test this theory out.

Some grandfather clocks actually have two nuts attached to the bottom of the pendulum. If your clock is one of these then most likely it is a very accurate clock. Many clock owners believe the bottom nut is a lock nut against the top nut. This is not true. Actually you must make sure that the bottom and top nuts do not touch. Let the top nut raise or lower the pendulum bob until you’ve gotten the timekeeping as accurate as possible. Then by either turning left or right use the weight of the top nut to make your final adjustments to your clock’s timing.

Thinking of buying an antique clock from eBay or other online source? Some sellers will go above and beyond to describe the clock as accurately as possible. If purchasing from a dealer online, or from an online auction, there may be detailed photos showing the clock movement and the case at different angles, original sales receipts, documentation of authenticity as well as clearly written policies about shipping costs, guarantees, etc.

In some cases and on the other flip of the coin, you'll find sellers who provide only minimum information about the clock. This is usually due to the the seller genuinely not knowing much about the clock or even clocks in general. Since there are scams out there and crooked people looking to take advantage of others, it might also be due to the seller's desire not to reveal information which might cause the buyer to ask for a reduction in price or pass on the deal altogether.

Here are some questions you can ask to help identify if your buy is a good deal or not:

- How old is the clock and do you know the exact year it was made?

- Is this clock model (if stated) pictured in any book or catalog?

- Is the signature on the clock (if any) the maker's name? Is the maker listed in any clock books?

- If there are any labels, are they original?

- Is the movement original to the case? Is the dial original?

- Do you know of anything that is not original or that has been replaced?

- Is anything missing? (decorative elements, trim, mechanical parts, etc.)

- What is the clock case material? (May be solid wood, wood veneer, plastic, Bakelite, marble, Adamantine, bronze, brass, silver, silverplate, copper, iron, pot metal with other finish, etc.)

- (In the case of bronze, brass, silver or other metal decorative elements): What metal is this? Is it solid (bronze, brass, etc.) or is it plated? How can you tell?

- Do you know the history of this clock? (Who owned it, how the seller came to possess it, etc.)

- Do you have any written documentation pertaining to its history? (Particularly important if stated to have been owned by a well known historical, political or entertainment figure.)

Clocks are something we use every day. The technology is so old that we often take it for granted. But even though pendulum clocks were perfected over 300 years ago, the way they work is amazing.

Early inventors discovered that the time it took for a pendulum to swing back and forth was always the same as long as the pendulum stayed the same length and the pendulum kept swinging. The key to a pendulum clock is the escapement. The pendulum and the escapement work together to create the tic-tock sound you hear. The escapements connect to the gear trains that drive the hands, chimes and moon phase dial. Each gear train is attached to a pulley by a weight. Over time the weight drops very slowly and that turns the gears. To keep the pendulum swinging, the escapement gives the pendulum just enough extra energy to overcome friction on each swing. When the weights get close to the end of the chain, you have to wind the clock. Winding the clock pulls the weights back up to the top so the entire process can start over again.

So that's how a pendulum clock works...
